Christmas Break is over and it's time to get back into the blog!
I hate to have the first post of the new semester deal with war, but that's the biggest news of the day. It seems to me the BBC is taking a decidedly anti-Israel stance in this story, but let me know what you think.

Well, it seems Al Qaeda is wasting no time blaming the President-elect for international incidents. No matter who you voted for, certainly no American is going to buy the idea that Obama is responsible for US policy before he has even been inaugurated.
A new list of the 7 Wonders of Nature is being compiled. Wonder what's being considered?
Susan Conklin sent in this interesting article about how some banks are responding to the current mortgage crisis. Is this a case for "buyer beware" or "too good to pass up"?
Kuniko Barnett submitted this article on a potential new model for American schools. Newsweek is a great source for articles pertinent to topical discussions. I used to use it as the text for my ENC1102 classes before its Newsweek Education Program was discontinued last year.
We're in week 2 of the spring term, and that means it's about time for me to have a big tech glitch - yes, right on time, I lost my BlackBerry. If you've been following me on Twitter (twitter.com/ctwiggs) you know this was a bad combination of very little sleep, a fast (for me) marathon, Norway's rice pudding, and the "intense" version of Mission Space. Things should be restored to normal in a day or so, as the aforementioned device makes it way back home via snail-mail courtesy of The Mouse. Please let me know if you have any trouble viewing the video or receiving it in your iTunes feed.
In this case, the secrecy really is holy. Worried that Catholics are "losing the sense of sin," the Vatican is allowing some light to be shed on a tribunal dealing with the confession of sins so grave only the pope can grant absolution.
Like many of you, I watched in amazement the story of the water landing yesterday when a US Airways flight apparently had birds strike the engines soon after takeoff. Thanks to Crystal May for sending in this link.
Every parent's worst fear is that something terrible will happen to his or her children. Those fears go into high gear every time Junior or Princess spends a night coughing or aching from fever. Not all of those situations are life-threatening, of course, but knowing what to do and how seriously to react is tough. Brandon Censon found an article at cnnhealth.com which offers some guidelines.

Amanda Kiramarios found this story at Newsweek's website regarding the athiest Michael Newdow's latest lawsuit. This is the guy who tried to take Under God out of the Pledge of Allegiance.
Joe Torres sent in this CNN.com article about one of President Bush's last acts in office.
So this is an historic day. Our 44th President has been inaugurated, and our nation waits for the change to be manifest on Main Street, USA. I have no doubt change will come, but I do wonder how much we will like it when it gets here. This line of thought brought me into an interesting conversation with someone at work today, and he thought I would enjoy reading the article linked below. I'm a little disappointed it's 12 years old, but then again, documents far older play an important role in our daily lives.
Once President Obama's Inaugural Address is released on the internet, I'll post it here. In the meantime, in case you missed it, President Bush's Farewell Address is well worth watching.
We had a rousing conversation on campus today at our Socrates Cafe. The topic was the story linked below about a high school girls' basketball coach who was fired after his team won a game 100 - 0. I'll be interested to see this guy on the sports shows talking about the incident, and I KNOW the shows will be interested in talking to him.
So, what do you think? Did the coach do something wrong?
Amanda Kiramarios sent in this link to an amazing story about an overwhelmed mother.

Kuniko Barnett sent in this article about the future of spinal cord injury treatment.

Inspired by my posting of the Texas high school basketball coach story, Susan Conklin sent in this much more serious high school football coach story.

Another article from Susan Conklin - I am grateful, but I hope her next submission has less to do with death.

Jessica Day sent in this link to a Harper's Magazine article about a German law professor who wants to see our former President put on trial for torture. There has actually been a long string of former heads of state put on trial internationally. Don't expect much to come of this except for perhaps some good video of a yelling German. For now you'll have to settle for text.
