The Cost of Rebuilding

My wife's cousin is on her way to Haiti this weekend. She will be heading up a team rebuilding an orphanage. Another friend has already been there to witness and report on the devastation. No one questions the need in Haiti; what is questionable is the Haitian government's ability to oversee reconstruction.

College Prep or Life Prep

I've just finished reading an excellent book by Matthew B. Crawford titled Shop Class as Soulcraft. Crawford left his position as head of a Washington Think Tank to open a motorcycle repair shop. His fascinating book challenges up to consider what we may be missing by denigrating the trades as second-class career choices. Somewhat in the same vein is the article linked below. How is a college professor to respond?

Bright Idea

Walt Disney World is undoubtedly one of my favorite places. There may be places I would rather be if I had unlimited resources, but Disney is only a short drive away, so until I can afford that private jet to carry me off to Europe at a moment's notice, I'm happy with the Mouse's house. Most of my time Sunday was spent in EPCOT Center, where the food and entertainment always keep me happy. EPCOT is all about looking to the future and sharing that future with the wider world. On a hot day, The Universe of Energy is a fine air-conditioned place to pass some time. While Spain isn't featured in this particular pavilion, perhaps it will be soon.

Academic Honesty

The first thing non-students and non-teachers comment on whenever I speak about my online classes is the potential for cheating. This is sad because the first thing I think about is the potential for learning. Perhaps this article from The Billings Gazette will put those doubters' minds at ease.
