As part of the North Campus library's continuing series of academic discussions, we proudly present our own Dr. Dana Thomas, Dean of Library Arts. Dr. Thomas will facilitate our conversation on how dogs can comfort us and bring us peace in this "dog eat dog" world! As a dog owner myself, I can attest to the unconditional love and sheer joy that my dog, Boomerang, brings me every day.

I hope you can join us for what promises to be a fun and educational conversation.

Marsha Phelts is a third generation Floridian, who began vacationing at American Beach when she was four years old. Today she is a full-time resident of American Beach and conducts walking tours of the community. Her book, "An American Beach for African Americans," was the first to chronicle the history of American Beach. After its publication by the University Pess of Florida in 1997, Marsha received the J.M. Family African American Achievers Award in 1998 and the Florida Trust Preservation Award in 1999. In 2008, the University Press of Florida published her second book, "The American Beach Cookbook," a collection of over 300 traditional recipes.

Marsha is the facilitator for our June "Something to Talk About" academic discussion on Thursday, June 25th, 10:30-noon in the Lucas Room of the library. She will provide samples from some of the recipes in her cookbook. Our special guests will be students from the classes of Professor Madeline Richard and Professor Jacquelyn Odom. Courtney Griffin and Gloria Warren, students from Professor Richard's class, will introduce and give words of appreciation to Mrs. Phelts. This discussion promises to be a memorable event.

Please join us on Wednesday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. in the Library Lucas Room when Dr. Sarah Caruthers-Jackson will facilitate our monthly academic discussion. Dr. Caruthers-Jackson will discuss her educational experiences and her methods of tutoring.

From April 9 through May 14, the North Campus Art Gallery is hosting the beautiful works of the Island Art Association Photographers Group. The group was founded 4 years ago by Roger Moore and Bill Raser and consists of a diverse membership of amateurs and professionals.

We hope you will visit us and enjoy this fabulous exhibit featuring talented local photographers.

We are so proud to announce that our March "Something to Talk About" series will feature none other than our own North Campus President, Dr. Barbara Darby. Dr. Darby will discuss her recent trip to South Africa.

At UNF, Ms. Dumbleton earned a BFA with a concentration in drawing and painting. Ms. Dumbleton went on to earn her Master's degree in Library Science from Florida State University. We are fortunate to have such a multi-talented faculty member working with us in the North Campus Library.
